Subject: Existing Rated Wall Verification
On an interior renovation project the design professional is required to identify all existing rated walls and horizontal assemblies. During construction it is not uncommon to discover that the construction is not rated, or does not have the rating stated on the plans. This obviously causes delays and extra expenses to the project. And if not uncovered in the field could result in serious harm to the public.
In order to reduce this opportunity for delay and extra expense, and to ensure the occupants and public are protected properly, effective immediately, all plans submitted showing existing rated walls and/or horizontal assemblies must have the construction details (wall and/or floor/ceiling sections, etc.) of any existing rated assembly shown on the plans by the design professional. Having a note stating “Two hour rated wall, confirm in the field” will not be accepted. It is the design professional’s responsibility to examine/confirm that the rated condition shown on his plans exists in the field.
